Well, we never made it to the Polar Express train ride because it literally snowed all day Friday. Officially, West Asheville got 17 inches and some areas got even more. It was incredibly beautiful! We have some pretty badly broken limbs on our tree in the front near the porch steps and several of our bushes are split open in the middle. Amy and Billy and the kids made it here about 3:30 Friday afternoon. They had to drive 20 miles an hour almost the whole way. It was so scary with cars sliding all over the road that Amy cried nearly the whole way. They barely got through the mountain pass before they closed it due to treacherous conditions and wrecked trucks and cars. We lost our power about 4 PM Friday and it was off until about 9 PM Saturday night. We didn't get too cold though because Gary brought in our kerosene heater and we also used our gas logs in the living room. Even though we had no electricity, we enjoyed hot water thanks to our gas hot water heater. We used the kerosene heater to do a little cooking on also. After awhile the kids got bored in the dark so we opened up Christmas gifts by flashlight and candlelight. It was pretty difficult but something we will always remember. We had lots of fun playing in the snow. It was almost impossible to walk in because you would sink down so far. We had some good snowball fights and Hunter got me in the face several times. Billy finally tackled Amy pretty hard down in the snow. He built a huge snowman in our yard. Olivia was just amazed at all of it and Alyssa loved rolling down the bank in the snow. Gary got our big generator out of the garage Saturday afternoon and connected it to our freezer and refrigerator so we wouldn't lose our food. He also hooked up our TV so that we could watch some movies Saturday night. We enjoyed walking outside in the snow though and we walked down Haywood road to Ingles but it was closed. Luckily, Burgermeister opened Saturday afternoon and we all walked over and enjoyed a delicious hot dinner. Of course, we didn't have church today and Amy and family were able to travel down to Hickory to Billy's family Christmas get together. We were thankful they made it safely down the mountain because the roads had been scraped. We still have tons of snow everywhere and more is expected several days this week but we are snug in our home sweet home!
