Christmas 2011 in Savannah

Gary and I camped in our camper for a fun-filled week at Skidaway Island State Park near Savannah, Georgia for our Christmas 2011 vacation. The 500 plus acre park was such a beautiful forest with palm trees, pines, and huge oaks draped in Spanish moss. It has miles of biking and hiking trails that wind through the forest and marsh land. We saw lots of wildlife: deer, foxes, owls, hawks, squirrels, and a variety of water fowl. We loved riding our bicycles through the forest in the late afternoons to watch for all the wildlife. Our favorite experience was when two red tail foxes ran in big circles around us chasing each other.

The visitor's center at the campground was fun with a huge skeleton of the 20 foot giant ground sloth that was discovered there in the late 1700s. I pettted a 3 month old alligator and learned lots of interesting facts from the forest ranger. They have a bird watching room that was just incredible for watching all the colorful variety of birds as they visited the feeders and birdbaths. The campground was very clean and nice. There were only about 20 campers in the entire place for the week, so it was quiet. We enjoyed sitting out by the campfire and relaxing under the trees. The temperature was great each day, ranging between the 50s and 60s, so we spent a lot of time outdoors.

We visited nearby Tybee Island a couple of times to spend time enjoying the ocean and sand. It was 74 degrees one afternoon and we soaked up the sunshine as we watched brave people playing in the ocean.

We also took a guided trolley tour of historic Savannah. Gary loved taking pictures of all the architecture and historical places. I enjoyed a little shopping in the quaint shops downtown.

We attended a nice Christmas program and Sacrament service at the Savannah Ward. We were both happy that Santa found and filled our stockings on Christmas morning.

We slept at least 10 hours each night, watched tons of movies, played Rummy, cooked fabulous food, romanced each other, and thoroughly relaxed for 7 glorious nights!
